Income Inequality and Economic Mobility

Our research examines the economic mobility for people depending on their starting income status and background. While the evidence for income inequality may not be conclusive, our research will examine economic mobility with fixed standards to explore whether the current rate of income inequality is harmful and creates a caste system with little to no opportunity for lower socioeconomic classes. We will look at this topic through two different lenses: economic mobility over time for one individual or one family unit, ie. the likelihood a person is going to change income brackets during their lifetime and the effects of socioeconomic status on the subsequent generation’s income. This will help us to better understand the effects of income inequality on populations and their ability to change status.
