Title: “An Adolescent Smoking Cessation Program for Rural Alternative Education Students.” Brief Description: Gamman smoking cessation facilitators taught the adolescents at the Kirksville Alternative School the importance of tobacco use prevention and cessation. The program lasted six weeks. Various teaching methods were incorporated, including multimedia, handouts, lecture, and group discussion. Upon successful completion of the smoking cessation program, at least one-fourth of the students expressed their “intention to quit” smoking as evaluated by a questionnaire. Research shows that successful smoking cessation programs include a combination of behavior change and group support - this program has both. It is recommended that this program continue and expand to alternative schools statewide, due to its success in impacting the students’ decisions on tobacco use. At the end of the session, the participant will be able to: Identify the smoking triggers amongst adolescents in alternative education and provide several cessation techniques for coping with smoking withdrawal symptoms.
