An Analysis of the Mental and Physical Well Being of Truman State University Athletes: Pre and Post COVID-19
The withdrawal from competitive play and teammates, lack of exercise, and the lack of structure in schedules has raised questions as to whether COVID-19 has positively or negatively impacted the mental well-being within the athletic community at Truman State University. For this study, two samples were used: the 2018 MACHB-A and the 2020 MACHB-A datasets. Several questions from the survey were analyzed to test for significant differences between the 2018 and 2020 MACHB-A. The survey questions studied were focused on prescription drug use, alcohol consumption, and mental health. MiniTab software was used to statistically analyze the data using a two sampled test of proportions. After multiple statistical tests, areas of significant change included: use of pain medication, the use of prescription drugs, and the regularity of binge drinking. Concerning questions focusing on mental health, while the prevalence of mental health issues did increase, the statistical difference between pre and post COVID-19 data was not significant.
