Nonfiction Paired with Science Fiction: Enhancing Processing and Engagement
Several studies have been done on the benefits of pairing nonfiction and fiction texts in the English classroom; however, we have little research on the specifics of how reading nonfiction texts alongside science fiction influences student engagement and processing. Throughout this study students read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick supplemented with nonfiction texts. Data collected includes student journals and discussion posts throughout the unit and notes on students in-class discussions about the readings and about students’ one to one conferencing with the teacher. At the end of the unit, students also completed a survey about their experience with the two genres. Due to publication deadlines, findings from this research will be delayed until this presentation. Expected outcomes are increased student engagement and processing of science fiction texts.
