The phrase “I hate reading” is comparative to a virus, spreading and infecting students at startlingly early ages. While there are many factors that promote these feelings, I wholeheartedly believe a major contributing factor is that reading is far too often a mandatory prescription instead of an exciting exploration. By using educational practices such as literature circles, students are provided the opportunity to have a choice in the material they read which has an immense impact on their engagement in both the text and their learning as a whole. Because the structure of literature circles is immensely malleable, it can be adapted in a variety of circumstances, even a global pandemic! This research outlines the process of implementing literature circles in a suburban high school setting and how, despite the current crisis in the world, student choice in reading can affect engagement in the classroom.
