Utilizing Multiple Literacies: A Culturally-Relevant Approach for Critical Thinking
As the idea of literacy expands, increasingly studies have attempted to redefine the literacies educators use in their classrooms. Technology and society have altered the way students can learn both in-and-out of school. Within an advanced freshmen ELA course, this research investigates the influence of multiple literacies on students’ critical thinking skills. Through the qualitative multi-case case study design, this research acknowledges the possible impact that multimodal assessments have on higher level thinking skills. Students examine a variety of literacies to discover which allow them to best represent a character from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The discussions in this field have impacted the resources students can use to show what they learned from a unit.
