The Effect of Self-Evaluation on Oral Reading Fluency

Oral reading fluency, comprised of accuracy, rate, and prosody, is a significant skill for readers of any age. Reading fluency overlaps with many other parts of daily life—especially in the sciences and social studies—and therefore is an important skill to use daily. Thirteen third-graders and eight fourth-graders were tasked with self-evaluating their oral reading fluency by listening to a recording of themselves reading a passage. This self-evaluation strategy, a solely auditory strategy, is also a significant skill, as students self-evaluate as much as teachers evaluate student work. This helps students identify the goals and strengths of their reading independently. From the results of the study, data shows that with more independent practice—and more time—a student’s oral reading fluency improved over the course of the study.
