An Examination of a 20th-Century Extended Technique: The Multiphonic

Throughout the 20th century, many composers experimented with new techniques with which to express their musical ideas beyond the musical expectations of previous centuries. Extended techniques for all instruments were heavily explored, leading to new expectations for musicians who wished to perform avant-garde works. One such experimental technique was multiphonics. A multiphonic is an extended technique that is generated with the voice, or on monophonic instruments such as the clarinet, flute, or saxophone; it occurs when two or more pitches sound simultaneously on the instrument. This presentation will explore the history of multiphonics, the different categories of multiphonics, and how they are produced. Additionally, works written for clarinet containing multiphonics and useful resources pertaining to the topic will be shared. In the interests of giving a thorough presentation, I will use a PowerPoint slideshow and plan to demonstrate several examples of multiphonics by playing them on the clarinet.
