Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy: Evaluating and Producing Writing in Varying Modes
As we move deeper into the digital age, preparing our students for life outside of education involves competency in communication through digital media as much as it does through written modes. Research in English education has expanded to include communication strategies through digital mediums, however, many secondary classrooms still operate the way they did ten years ago, leaving students ill-prepared for the digital world they’ll enter after high school. This qualitative study explored the impact of multi-modal projects on student attitudes towards critical thinking and literacy in order to better empower students to analyze and make use of various mediums in the most appropriate and efficient ways. Through the analysis, production, and composition of communication through modes, students were able to explore the power of voice in ways that assimilate to methods of communication most often used in today’s digital society.
