Music and Cognitive Development Across the Lifespan
Music can be an impactful aspect of a person’s life and it is important to understand the many cognitive benefits music can provide. Research has shown that music positively affects cognitive development across all stages of the lifespan. The research compiled in this literature review describes the relationship between music and cognition at many stages of development, from prenatal to late adulthood. Music is shown to be beneficial for humans of all ages and with different types of cognition, including memory, prenatal development, achievement, and neural effects. Music has also been used to lessen the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. Our research suggests that music can play an integral role in cognitive development, and we hope that this literature review will inspire future research on music, including the ways it should be emphasized at school, at work, and at home, starting from a young age and continuing throughout an individual’s life.
