Rediscovering Charles Galloway: The Life and Music of a St. Louis Musician

Charles Henry Galloway (1871-1931) was one of the most prolific performers and teachers of organ in the St. Louis area during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. A child prodigy, Galloway was employed as a church organist by the age of seven and later served as the official organist for the St. Louis World’s Fair. Unfortunately, in spite of his many contributions to the music of St. Louis, Charles Galloway has been all but forgotten. The Galloway Archive Project was created in 2019 to shed light on this neglected musician by compiling and cataloguing documents related to Galloway and his life. This presentation will provide more in-depth biographical information on Galloway as well as a brief discussion of the scope of the Galloway Archive Project. In addition, it will explore his significance not just as an organist, but as a composer through the performance of several of his more notable works.
