Abandoned Buildings in Missouri

Anna Cooke
Prof. Priya S. Kambli, Faculty Mentor

This body of work documents abandoned buildings in rural and urban Missouri. When I started this project, I wanted to capture the aesthetic of dilapidated buildings, but I soon realized that lives were affected by abandonment of these buildings, and lives continue to be impacted by their state of ruin. Overgrown vegetation suggests a lack of human presence, but in many cases these structures sit within communities full of people who view them as nothing more than a nuisance. The broken windows, graffiti that decorates facades, and litter that’s entangled in the brush are all evidence of the people who have been there and an indicator of how communities view these vacant buildings.
