Freshman 15: Myth or Fact?

Kelsey P. Vail
Dr. Anton Daughters, Faculty Mentor

The period between high school and college is filled with advice and warnings from others. Do not mix whites and colors, take shower shoes with you, do not eat all junk food, and remember to do some exercises to avoid the dreaded Freshman 15. Freshmen students are forewarned about the potential weight gain in college and it appears that women are warned more than men. This study was conducted to discover if the alleged “Freshman 15” is fact or fiction and if women gained more than men. I took data from previous researchers’ studies and compared them. The data showed that while freshmen did gain weight, they typically gained between 2-4 lbs. and some students even lost weight. This study also found that on average; men gained between 0-2 lbs. more than women.
