Afrofuturism: How the Future Can Impact Now

Afrofuturism, where science fiction, folklore, and African pride intersect, has been present in creative writing, visual art, fashion, film, and music for over fifty years. Recent popular examples include films such as Black Panther, Us, and Get Out and the music of Janelle Monae and clipping. Afrofuturism is a way for African-Americans to see themselves in ways in which they are not often typically represented in popular media. Incorporating an Afrofuturistic lens in the context of the music classroom can give students a vehicle for self-expression they may not have previously felt on their own. This session will provide a history and survey of Afrofuturist art and artists as well as provide materials for use in the music classroom.
