Correlation between Body Composition Measurement Techniques and the Army Physical Fitness Test
The military continues to search for acceptable and accurate methods of assessing the body composition of potential candidates to determine their capacity to meet the demands of service.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body composition and the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). ROTC cadets (n = 22) were measured for body fat using duel-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). On a separate day, each cadet performed a 2-mile run, 2-min situp, and 2-min push-up test. DXA %fat was negatively related to push-ups (r = -0.74) and positively related to 2-mile run time(r = 0.80); it was not significantly related to 2-min situps (r = -0.21). Lean mass was positively related to push-ups (r = 0.71) and negatively related to 2-mile run (r = -0.52) but not related to sit-ups (r = 0.11). Specific body composition measurements are related the APFT but provide differing estimates of performance.
