Mental Resilience: A Photovoice Analysis
Mental resilience is the ability to adapt and manage extreme stress. During the fall 2017 semester, an IRB-approved photovoice study investigating how participants depicted ‘mental resilience’ was conducted. Using convenience sampling methods participants (n=16) submitted 51 photos for the study. A constant comparison method of analysis was used to construct a central theme focused on coping strategies which was evident in all photos. Sub-themes included: mindfulness, creativity, sense of belonging, planning, and task-oriented coping. Photos from the project will eventually be on display during a public gallery. The photos will be used to encourage students to initiate constructive conversations surrounding mental health. Future goals include raising awareness about mental health and implementing an educational opportunity for students to learn skills to enhance their mental resilience.
