Contraceptive Use and Prevalence Among Women Ages 18-24 in Rural United States and Rwanda

In nearly all fields of health care, rural communities are consistently at a disadvantage. Access to modern resources, in addition to conservative and traditionally-leaning values have, in the past, limited one’s ability to seek optimal health care options. Women, particularly young women, are considered to be one of the most vulnerable populations. Attention must focus on preventative and intervention methods when it comes to health care services, particularly in regards to family planning and safe contraceptive use. Thus, the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and level of accessibility will be collected and compared between Rwandan Demographic Health Survey data and data collected from a similar population in rural United States. The results will examine if and why disparities exist between the two populations and subsequently, the consequence of these disparities and how they can be mitigated.
