The Completed Recovery and Assembly of a 39 Day Old Foal Skeleton

The intricate detail of the equine skeleton plays an essential part in the functionality and athleticism of the species. On May 1st, 2016, Theodore, a 39 day old foal owned by Truman State University, was humanely euthanized due to a severe case of colic. On May 4th, 2016, a necropsy was performed revealing an obstruction of the small intestine. His carcass was placed in a field beneath wire in order for the natural decomposition process to occur. In October of 2016, Theodore’s remains were collected from the field. The bones were cleaned, using a dilute bleach solution, and labeled to prepare for assembly. The skeleton was reassembled using thin wire and has been placed on a rolling stand for transportation. The completed foal skeleton model will be utilized for educational purposes in the Agricultural Science department and displayed in Magruder Hall for the public to view.
