The Multigenre Paper: The Impact of Multigenre Writing on Understanding Text and Engaging Students

Anna DeMoor♦
Dr. Rebecca Dierking, Faculty Mentor

While many students are used to writing a straight forward paper with a beginning, middle, and end all on one page, a different type a paper has gained interest: multigenre papers. While students are expected to show their understanding through putting thought to page, it can be difficult for some. The multigenre paper allows the students to have freedom of creativity, and show their understanding through more than one form of genre. This case study examines the use of a multigenre paper as the final project for understanding the play, A Raisin in the Sun. Collected data included three different student artifacts including the completed paper, reflections from each genre, and observations from the teacher during conferencing. This data was used to determine if multigenre papers have the ability to engage students in writing and help the students connect to the play.
