Pauline House Churches

Sydney W. Moxley
Dr. Mark Appold and Dr. Jennifer Jesse , Faculty Mentors

In this paper I will be analyzing first-century house churches, specifically those around the time of the apostle Paul and arguing how the nature of the house churches rebelled against popular Roman culture and demonstrated Paul’s Galatians 3:28 message centered around Jesus. In order to accomplish my goal I will be taking a historical analysis approach along with sociological and theological implications which will highlight the communal aspects of house churches reflecting the Galatians 3:28 message. As a way to reflect the Galatians 3:28 passage, this paper will include brief background of Greco-Roman house structures and food practices, accounts of house churches with diverse leadership and attendance extrapolated from the Pauline epistles, and the social conflicts which necessitated the existence and careful consideration of the passage.
