Memorization in Choral Performance
Memorization in musical performance has become commonplace, especially within popular music and entertainment. What role, then, could memorization play in an academic performing ensemble to promote a more entertaining and expressive performance? Through an analysis of existing literature on the topic of music memorization, I discuss the potential value of memorization within the realm of choral music performance, the percentage of rehearsal time that should be devoted to memorization, and successful strategies for memorization of music. I conclude that while the memorization of choral music requires thoughtful budgeting of rehearsal time and strategic lesson planning, it can ultimately bring a choral performance to new levels of expression.
