Engaging Students With Digital Video
In a technological world, students need to learn how to write in multiple modes. Working with other modes is imperative for future jobs and can play to students’ strengths. This study explores how a digital video writing assignment affects student engagement. Students created videos in which they chose a specific scientific advancement and argued if it could be an example of science going too far. Data was collected throughout the process: students wrote reflections about their own writing and this project, the researcher and his mentor teacher made observations as students worked, and the researcher conferenced with students. The data suggest that those who felt confident in what they were doing were apt to be more engaged, and those who did not feel confident would struggle to engage. A primary concern for teachers, then, should be building confidence in the work that students are doing, no matter the work.
