Relationship Between Post-Concussion Written Evaluations and Physical Balance in Post-Concussion Individuals

Concussions have become a prominent factor in many sports. Some controversy exists concerning the best way to assess post-concussion individuals in order to effect the best treatment. Current tests may not fully assess the damage to the brain suffered following a concussion. The purpose of the study is to assess the relationship between post-concussion symptoms and dynamic balance performance. The goal will be to evaluate the potential of a dynamic balance test to replace post-concussion subjective criteria in evaluating the possible residual effects of traumatic brain injury in young athletes. Using selected written tests, computer simulations, and a Biodex balance system, two groups of participants, one with a history of concussions and one with no prior head injuries, will be evaluated to determine the relationship and predictive value of the Biodex balance system for assessing post-concussion effects. This study will be ongoing as new participants are identified and tested.
