Jane Austen on Sisterhood in Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility

This paper focuses on the sisterly relationships between Jane and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, on the one hand, and Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, on the other and how each woman grows into a more well-rounded character because of their relationship with their sister. This paper will explore the ways in which the relationships between sisters that Austen creates act as a foil to the romantic relationships that the Bennet and Dashwood women eventually enter into. By developing these sisterly bonds, Austen sets expectations for what kind of man each woman will be best with, and the reader gets a deeper look into the different dimensions of the personalities of the women in these novels.
