Effects of Using a Three-Stage System for Peer Review

Katlyn M. Ashmann♦
Dr. Rebecca Dierking, Faculty Mentor

Peer review is a useful activity in the English classroom for its ability to teach students about giving and receiving feedback, revision, and building community. Peer review also offers students the ability to explore other styles and perspectives. However, teachers and students alike have expressed frustrations with peer review over the quality of feedback students often give and receive. The quality of feedback suffers in peer review mainly due to students being unsure of what to say and having a low level of comfort with being critical. The purpose of this study is to separate the activities of peer review into three different stages: sharing, responding, and evaluating. This is meant to increase students’ comfort level with peer review and give more direction about what kind of feedback to give and when. By focusing the process of peer review, the researcher expects the review itself will become more focused.
