Digital Video Composing in the English Language Arts Classroom
The purpose of this research was to investigate how digital video composing impacts students’ self-concepts as writers. Digital video composing can be defined as the creation of videos that include original text and a combination of voice-over, music, images, and/or video. The first phase of the study involved evaluating each student’s self-concept as a writer through observational field notes, class discussions, individual student conferences, and informal journal responses. Students then participated in a digital video composition unit, learning about digital video composition and creating original digital videos. After participating in the unit, students’ work was evaluated and each student wrote a reflection paper, detailing his or her personal process of creating a digital video and how the process impacted his or her self-concept as a writer. This research highlights how the implementation of digital video composing in the English language arts classroom can influence students’ self-concepts as writers.
