Fourth-Grade Students Engaged in Reading for Enjoyment
This study examined the reading habits of 22 fourth graders when they read for enjoyment during independent reading time in class. The students in this study were from a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. The data were collected from Engagement Inventories, Status of the Class, observations, and a Reading for Enjoyment Questionnaire. The observed behaviors were time engaged in reading when the students were in class, which books they were reading, the page number they began reading, and whether they read the same book at home as at school. Students demonstrated a variety of reading behaviors such as maintaining engagement in reading, being interested in their books, reading books in a series, and wanting to keep reading instead of doing something else.
