Reaching Low-Achieving Students: A Support Model for Sixth Grade Mathematics
Rebecca M. Newman♦
Dr. Wendy Miner, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of my project is to determine the effectiveness of a sixth grade math support model. The support is given through teacher collaboration in two heterogeneous math classes. With two teachers in the room, one teacher is responsible for whole group instruction, and the other teacher works daily with individuals or small groups on either the lesson of the day, re-teaching a previous lesson, or enhancing basic multiplication facts. Data and scores from approximately 10 students who received daily support in the combined classes are compared to the approximately 35 students who are not receiving daily support. The results point to the advantages of direct math support in heterogeneous classrooms with low-achieving math students.
