Portrayals of Females in Rap Music

This study examines the portrayal of women in a representative sample of 125 rap songs spanning from 1990 to 2014. Content analysis was executed using a combination of general themes that suggested the following attitudes regarding women such as distrust, degradation, sexual objectification, violence, sympathy, appreciation, respect, and love. These themes were used to identify whether the level of misogynistic content in rap songs had experienced any changes in the past 15 years. Findings showed a general increase in degrading portrayals of women and a general decrease in the number of times that love for women is mentioned. The most popular themes were sexual objectification, degradation, appreciation, and respect towards women. Possible implications of these findings are discussed.
