I Constructed a Language and All I Got Was This Lousy Grammar
Lewis N. Dunham
Dr. Douglas Ball, Faculty Mentor

This presentation seeks to describe the benefits, both scholarly and personal, to constructing a language, and to give insight into the process. I briefly compare my own goals in my language constructing efforts to those of other subcategories of constructed languages. I discuss the language I constructed in an advanced linguistics course in the spring of 2015, Nālēp̂eřu Līlēragi, an artistic language created for a fictional society. I give an overview of the major features of the language, with special attention paid to its sound system, pronouns, and treatment of subjects and objects. Throughout this overview I discuss the balance I tried to keep between making the language consistent with both the tendencies of natural languages and my own, sometimes conflicting, aesthetic preferences. Spoken samples of my language will be provided.
