Rural vs Urban Upbringings: Does Background Affect a Student's Ability to Adjust?
Samuel L. Schmid
Dr. Paul Shapiro and Dr. Anton Daughters, Faculty Mentors

Data was collected from students in randomly selected fall classes at Truman State University in Kirksville to determine if there are significant differences between where a student grew up and their opinions about the small college town in which they currently reside. From a sample of 111 students chi-square testing of survey data revealed that there were differences between students who grew up in rural, suburban, and urban areas and whether or not they had a hard time adjusting to life at Truman. Rural students were less likely to report having a hard time adjusting. Students raised in the city or suburbs had a harder time adjusting to their new environment.
