The Efficacy of Cydectin® Oral Drench and Garlic Barrier in Controlling Internal Parasites in Sheep Flocks of Northeast Missouri

Forty-two lambs from two farms were utilized to test the efficacy of a chemical anthelmintic and a natural dewormer in controlling internal parasites in sheep. It was hypothesized that the chemical anthelmintic would be the most efficacious while some efficacy would be seen with the natural treatment. Sheep were split into three groups: Control, Cydectin® Oral Drench, and Garlic Barrier. Three visits to the farms were made two weeks apart each. Data collected included individual weight and FAMACHA score. An individual fecal sample was collected to determine parasite burdens by conducting fecal egg counts. Parasite species counted includes Haemonchus Contortus, Ostertagia, and Trichostrongylus axei. ANOVA was the method of testing for means difference. Samples from the Cydectin® group showed a significant reduction in FEC from Time 1 to Time 3 (p<0.01). While it was not statistically significant (p=0.18), some efficacy was seen when comparing the Garlic to the Control group.
