Sulfate esters are a significant component of aerosols in the atmosphere. Erythritol, a volatile organic compound (VOC) with four hydroxyl groups, reacts with sulfate to form erythritol sulfate ester. The synthesis of a secondary erythritol sulfate monoester starting from 1,4-anhydroerythritol will be discussed, focusing on approaches for opening the ether ring in the structure.
