The creative arts (music, dance, theater, literature, crafts and visual arts) have been recognized by those working in a variety of fields to be a viable tool for social, political and economic development, as well as a means to promote public health and human rights aims. This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the role of art in global development, particularly in its functions as a market good, a representation of cultural heritage, and a means of intercultural communication. It also examines art in the context of global processes such as globalization and modernization. Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to forge a new understanding of the creative arts as they relate to development outcomes and to evaluate current international and community development planning practices based upon its conclusions.
