Exploring Individual and Communal Meaning-Making in the Blogosphere

In this paper the researcher discusses bloggings potential support of literacy learning in secondary English, with a focus on meaning-making and where it occurs within the blogosphere. She reports on a case study in which she implemented a class poetry blog for a group of freshmen honors students in a suburban Missouri high school. In their blog, students were required to post once each week in response to a poem with the goal of connecting the poems theme to Fahrenheit 451, as well as comment on two peers posts. Identifying where within the blog significant learning occurredwithin individual posts or within online discussions through commentsshe analyzed the posts and comments, utilizing Garrisons five stages of critical thinking and France Henris model for online discussions as analytical frameworks. Data also included notes and observations recorded during class discussions and in-class blogging time, as well as during individual student conferences.
