The Destined Collapse of the Moor: a Study of Othello
Samuel W. Stewart
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
While some critics minimize the role of race in Othello, others emphasize it. Iago utilizes Othello's vulnerable perception of social acceptance, represented by his different cultural background, and targets it to push Othello to his limits and bring him down. Othello's mental and social status is a major weakness that Iago attacks and this is demonstrated by Othello's self-awareness of his race. This paper will examine the ways in which Othello's race contributes to his eventual downfall.
