A Deteriorating King: The Fracturing of Hearts and Psyche in King Lear

In King Lear, the relationships between the King and his three daughters is central to initiating the story and creating conflict throughout the play. The king evaluates his family and those around him based on their ability to speak from the heart. The betrayal King Lear feels from his family is central to introducing the idea that suffering is essential aspect of human life and leads to his fractured psyche. This paper seeks to illustrate the strong undercurrent of emotions in the play, the betrayal King Lear feels from his three daughters and the fracturing of Lear's psyche as a result of betrayal.
