Teriyaki vs. Takoyaki: Yukio Mishima's View of Westernization in Japan in Spring Snow

Mishima in Spring Snow suggests that disrupting the balance between western ideas and Japanese thought would result in the loss of Japan's cultural roots. There is a balancing act that must be done when it comes to Japanese thought process and Western ideals, but there is a danger of traditions being lost to history. However, there must be some growth to ensure the survival of the people. So where does the balance between the two mindsets fall, if such a thing exists? Can both cultures survive in Japan, or will one inevitably succumb to the other and be lost? I will explore Mishima's novel and determine the outcomes that he says will happen should Westernization overpower Japan's traditional view of the world.
