Music and the Mind: A Review of Music Education in the United States Through Public Schools and Non-Profit Organizations

It has been the assertion of many artists and educators for years that music is a positive and influential factor, especially as it relates to the learning processes in a child's mind. Over the past fifteen years, studies regarding the connection between music and the development of the brain have increased substantially and are beginning to prove these claims true. A detailed look at these studies provides a glimpse into the learning processes of the mind, while also emphasizing the need for music advocacy in education. Public schools and non-profit art organizations are the two outlets through which students have the opportunity to learn more about music and to benefit from it. With the dissemination of such studies, it will become apparent that the amount of funding provided in the United States for public music education programs is too little and should be increased.
