The purpose of this study is to investigate the management of cardiac dysrhythmias among newborns with congenital heart defects. A review of primary and secondary sources in the medical and nursing databases was conducted. Guidelines from professional organizations were reviewed. Expert opinion was obtained from one neonatologist from a level III NICU. Based upon the generated evidence, four dysrhythmias were identified as most frequently occurring in most cases: supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and ventricular extrasystoles. Standards for treatment were reviewed according to each dysrhythmia.
