Chloe Bertschi♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor
Thomas S. Reed is a longtime resident of Kirksville, Missouri and former piano technician at Truman State University. He has made it his life's work to find an alternative to the traditional staff used to notate music. His accomplishments include publishing periodicals on the subject, inventing alternative forms of music notation, founding an international organization dedicated to the topic, publishing a directory of music notation proposals, and much more. This thesis documents these achievements while discussing the history of the traditional staff, its weaknesses, and the logic behind creating a new system of music notation.
