Prof. Faith Beane, Faculty Mentor
As a French major with a minor in French translation, I have translated 40 pages of Gregoire Delacourts On ne voyait que le bonheur, a contemporary French novel that was up for the most prestigious literary prize in France. This novel was published in 2014 and no parts of it have been previously translated. I have chosen 40 pages that exemplify the different styles, voices, and literary techniques used in this novel. In my paper, I will discuss the difficulties of translating this work, which include different levels of slang, French language expressions, and the modern style of the novel. I will talk about the different resources I used during the course of my translation, such as dictionaries and thesauruses. I will show the French version and English version on a Powerpoint to portray an idea of the work I did in translating parts of this novel.
