Tonal and Motivic Construction in The Olden Time Long Ago by Jonathon McAlister
Jonathon B. McAlister♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

The Olden Time Long Ago is a chamber work written for flute, Bb clarinet, vibraphone, marimba, viola and cello. Tonal centers and thematic-motivic content of the piece are derived from a source twelve-tone row, which is used rather strictly in the middle section of the work and more loosely in its two outer sections. Tetrachords constructed from this source row are used to control the harmonic flow of the music, and pedal tones drawn from the row help provide a sense of tonality throughout. The presentation will describe the use of these compositional elements, and will include audio excerpts from the work.
