A Musical Trajectory: Analysis of Anti-political sentiments in Brazilian Popular Music
Carolina Scalzo
Dr. Marc Rice, Faculty Mentor
This piece examines the music that most contributed to voicing youth political dissent during the Brazilian Dictatorship which lasted from 1964 to 1985. A musical and historical analysis of two pieces from two distinct musical genres will reveal how youth dissent was voiced differently during the initial period of dictatorship, in comparison to its later stages. The songs, "Panis et Circenses" by Os Mutantes and "Que País É Esse" by Legião Urbana also illustrate the importance of foreign-influenced musical genres, which artists embraced to speak out against the regime to degrees unforeseen through traditional musical styles.
