L'Éducation Prioritaire en France: An Evaluation of Recent Reforms

Since the inception of priority education in France in 1981, successive government programs have attempted to reduce the social and geographic inequalities of the French school system by providing supplementary resources to struggling areas. In January of 2014 the Minister of National Education, Vincent Peillon, announced a new set of reforms titled Refonder l'éducation prioritaire. This development follows a highly publicized study from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that revealed France to be the developed nation where socio-economic determinism is strongest. By examining scholarly journals, government documents, and journalistic treatments the researcher defines and contextualizes priority education programs in France and discusses the various problems that they face. After describing Refonder l'éducation prioritaire, the background research will then be synthesized to evaluate Peillon's recent reforms and present a vision for the future.
