Assessing and Addressing Needs in a Small Museum
Staci L. Sanders* and Calie M. Holden
Dr. Sara Orel, Faculty Mentor
Small museums have different needs than large museums; they also have more limited resources and staff. The Adair County Historical Society (ACHS) is typical of these kinds of museums. ACHS is run by a group of dedicated volunteers who primarily record local history and do genealogical research. Over the past year and a half Truman student volunteers have been working on a needs assessment of the ACHS. In doing this work we began researching collection databases for small museums. We then prepared a proposal to the ACHS Board of Governors for support in refreshing and replacing exhibits, and identified an appropriate computer program to allow professional and up-to-date method of cataloguing objects in the museum. We have installed a new music exhibit, and have begun to replace the cataloging system. The outcome of our work with the ACHS has prompted new plans for future collaboration with the ACHS.
