Field Study Dissolved Oxygen Concentration in Belize Barrier Reef System

The Meso-American Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef system in the world. While it helps significantly with the development of the local tourism industry, this reef system also serves as a home to many marine species, which then contributes to the worldwide marine biodiversity. With the concern that the global climate change affects the overall reef system, baseline data on water quality of the reef system is in needed to allow for continued monitoring of reef health. The research presented here focuses on investigating how dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) are affected by reef structure. Specifically, how does dissolved oxygen concentration change along a continuum from the shore line through the lagoon over the reef to the open ocean. Additionally, the change in dissolved oxygen along the length of the reef was studied.
