American Composer Michael Daugherty's Use of Musical Interpretation to Represent the Geographical and Spatial Aspects of New York City Through His Clarinet Concerto, Brooklyn Bridge: IV North

This research investigates the fourth movement of Brooklyn Bridge for Clarinet and Symphonic Band by Michael Daugherty. The piece was composed to musically portray a panoramic view of the bridge from all sides, which make up the four movements: East, South, West, and North. This study will analyze the musical gestures, shapes, and sounds used throughout the fourth movement. It will then examine the spatial and geographical aspects of north New York City and how they are musically represented throughout the movement. Photos and musical examples will be displayed through a PowerPoint slide show, and audio excerpts of the piece will be played throughout the discussion.
