Read Me the World: A Framework for Successful Multicultural Children's Literature

Over the past several decades, childrens literature has expanded itself to include a greater diversity of multicultural books. While these books help to create a worldview that includes different religions, ethnicities, cultures, etc., a contemporary framework outlining quality multicultural childrens literature does not exist. After completing extensive research investigating existing frameworks and conducting focus groups with both American and Chinese students, I have outlined a framework by which we can evaluate multicultural childrens literature. While this framework seeks to be dynamic, it is not meant to be the ultimate authority, but rather guidelines to help teachers, parents, librarians, and authors to write and select the best multicultural childrens literature. This presentation seeks to discuss those guidelines, how I created them, and why they will serve to enhance the current literature that exists.
