Aldrich Hazen Ames: The Most Detrimental Spy In the History of the CIA
John T. Harker
Dr. David Robinson and Dr. Jeff Gall, Faculty Mentors

This presentation analyzes the case of Aldrich Hazen Ames, a high-profile Central Intelligence Agency employee who, from the years of 1985 to 1994, provided information to the Soviet Union and its successor. His espionage led to the capture and execution of at least ten agents who were spying for the United States in the Soviet Union, and he provided hundreds of documents to the KGB, making him the most detrimental spy in the history of the CIA. The presentation will examine why the FBI took such a long time to find him, various interpretations of his motives and reasons for his actions, and the implications that the Ames case had for the CIA.
